It is common to hear cloud computing types and cloud computing services used interchangeably. However, there is a difference between the two terms.

Cloud computing types refer to the specific type of cloud. These include public, private, and hybrid clouds. The hybrid cloud is a combination of public and private clouds, and the fourth option is a multicloud. The multicloud is a combination of any or all of the different cloud types, including one or more public clouds or multiple clouds connected or operated separately by an organization.

What are the Types of Cloud Computing Services?

Cloud computing services are one of three different types. These include Platforms-as-a-Service (PaaS), Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Determining which option is right for your needs starts with understanding the differences.

  • Infrastructure-as-a-Service – this is an ideal option for most companies and businesses. It provides the servers, storage, network, and the operating systems that the business needs. Many enterprise companies and small to mid-sized businesses rely on IaaS to operate on a daily basis and to have the ability to grow and expand in a cost-effective way. It eliminates the need for in-house servers and costly IT teams.
  • Software-as-a-Service – businesses can take advantage of pay-as-you-go use of essential business software. This is sometimes also offered as a flat-rate subscription option. Applications, mobile access, or business operations can all operate while the service maintains the software and security.
  • Platform-as-a-Service – a bit more involved, PaaS has the provider offering the infrastructure and framework for the software. At the same time, the business manages all the applications.

Talking to a cloud computing provider helps to determine which cloud computing services are right for your needs.
